Yu-Gi-Oh! cards

Yu-Gi-Oh! is one of the oldest TCGs still running, and its vintage 1st Edition is a well-identified premium segment. Early English print runs combine cutting defects with borders that forgive nothing.

In short

On Yu-Gi-Oh!, the premium grading segment is vintage 1st Edition, particularly the Legend of Blue-Eyes White Dragon set (code LOB), the game's first English set. The difficulties there are twofold: early print runs show frequent cutting defects, and the cards' dark borders make any whitening stand out. Japanese print runs of the game generally show more consistent centering and cutting than their English equivalents, which makes them statistically more favourable to high grades.

What blocks grades on Yu-Gi-Oh!

Dark borders

As with Magic, dark borders turn a micro-chip into a visible white dot. It is the most frequently noted defect on the game.

Vintage
Early print-run cutting

The first English printings show notable cutting irregularities. They are original, not caused by handling — but they still count towards the grade.

Ultra and Secret Rare surfaces

The game's holographic treatments scratch easily and read immediately under raking light. Tilt the card before calling it clean.

Counterfeits

High-value vintage Yu-Gi-Oh! is heavily counterfeited. The light test and font comparison against a reference copy are prerequisites.

The segments that get graded

LOB 1st Edition

The game's first English set, released in 2002. It is the undisputed premium segment, and where the gap between a high grade and a raw copy is widest.

Iconic cards

Blue-Eyes White Dragon, Dark Magician, Exodia and the game's founding figures. Steady demand, driven by nostalgia as much as play.

Japanese vintage

Predates the English versions, better cut, but harder to source and authenticate from Europe.

Tournament prints and promos

Prize cards, event promos and limited runs: structural scarcity and strong demand for authenticity certification.
