NBA basketball cards
NBA basketball is the most active modern grading segment. Prizm, Select and Optic dominate, and rookies of major players concentrate considerable submission volumes.
In short
On modern NBA basketball cards, the grade is almost entirely decided by surface and edges. The chrome finishes of Prizm, Select and Optic reveal micro-scratches at any angle, and dark borders show chipping straight out of the pack. It is also the segment where the price gap between a 9 and a 10 is most brutal: because high grades are abundant, only perfection pays. Rookies of major players account for a considerable share of submissions — Victor Wembanyama cards occupied six of the ten most-graded cards of 2024.

What costs points
The chrome finish acts like a mirror: every micro-scratch reads. It is the segment's number one defect, and it is often already there on opening.
Black or coloured borders show microscopic white dots. Look at them at an angle, with a loupe if needed.
Some insert sets have looser centering than the base set. Measure before hoping for a 10.
Cards with thick relic or patch inserts tend to warp, penalising surface and sometimes corners.
Basketball FAQ
Why are so many basketball cards graded?
Because the value gap between a 9 and a 10 is proportionally the largest on the whole market. On a sought-after rookie, that gap alone justifies the submission fee — hence the considerable volumes seen on recent rookies.
Submit everything or screen first?
Screen, and strictly. On a segment where only the 10 really pays, submitting a card that comes back a 9 means paying to lose value: a 9 often resells worse than the same card raw, once fees are deducted.
Which company for modern basketball?
PSA dominates this segment by volume and liquidity. BGS retains a place on very high-value cards thanks to its subgrades.
Screen before you submit
On this segment, pre-analysis is the only way to avoid paying for a 9.
