What decides a soccer card's grade depends on its era. On modern chrome issues — Panini Prizm, Topps Chrome, Select — it is micro-scratches on the surface and chipping on dark borders, visible at almost any light angle. On older cards, it is centering and cut regularity. Autographed cards get a separate assessment of the signature, which may receive its own grade depending on the company.

What decides the grade
Chrome surfacesModern
Prizm, Chrome and their refractors show micro-scratches at almost any angle. It is the leading source of lost points on modern cards.
Border chipping
Dark borders show white micro-chips, sometimes straight out of the pack. Nothing to do with your handling, but counted all the same.
Autographs
The signature is assessed separately from the card. A signature that smears, fades or was applied on a glossy area drags the whole thing down.
Older cuttingVintage
On older sets, centering and cut regularity become the limiting factor again, as with any vintage.

Pan-European audience, therefore a wider resale market than a single domestic league.
Autographed and numbered cards
Explicit, verifiable scarcity. Certification secures the signature's authenticity as much as the card's condition.

Older sets have a stable nostalgia audience, with copies in fine condition now scarce.

PSA, BGS or PCA for a soccer card in Europe?
PSA for maximum resale liquidity. BGS if you want detailed subgrades on a high-value card. PCA, a French company, avoids transatlantic shipping and customs delays — a real argument on a mid-value card, where those costs weigh proportionally more than on a rare piece.
Does the grade matter as much on modern as on older cards?
It matters more on modern. High grades are abundant there, so the price gap between a 9 and a 10 is proportionally enormous. On older cards, absolute scarcity also supports mid grades.
Should I grade a pack-fresh card?
Not systematically. Border chipping and surface micro-scratches are often present on opening with modern cards: an untouched card may well not reach a 10.
