BGS or CGC
Both can break a grade into four criteria. The difference lies in what they charge for it, how fast they are, and above all where their slab resells.
In short
BGS prints four subgrades and offers the Black Label Pristine 10, which requires all four at 10: it is the better choice on a high-value modern card whose condition you want documented. CGC charges for subgrades as an option but posts lower entry pricing and fast turnaround, and its slab is particularly well recognised on TCG, especially Japanese printings. In short: BGS for the card you defend, CGC for volume and for Japanese.

Choosing by use case
BGS. The four subgrades make a case: they say exactly why the card is worth its price. On a card you believe is flawless, the Black Label changes the status of the object.
CGC. Low entry pricing, short turnaround, a slab recognised on the segment: that is the calculation that holds when you submit several cards rather than one centrepiece.
CGC. This is its strongest ground, and the segment where the value gap against a PSA slab is narrowest — so where paying more elsewhere is hardest to justify.
BGS, if you are not going to PSA. The segment recognises Beckett subgrades, long established on US sports, where CGC is less embedded.

Are CGC subgrades worth as much as BGS subgrades?
They carry the same underlying information — four scored criteria — but the ecosystem differs: Beckett subgrades have been established on the US market for decades, and the Black Label has no equivalent. At CGC they function mainly as documentation.
Which is faster?
Both offer week-scale services at a high price. On economy levels both run into tens of business days. From Europe, the deciding factor is often shipping rather than processing.
Can a BGS 9.5 be compared with a CGC 9.5?
Not directly. Tolerances differ and no official equivalence exists. On the market, value depends mostly on segment: on Japanese cards a CGC 9.5 is very well accepted; on modern US sports the Beckett slab is more sought after.
What if PSA is what I actually want?
That is often the case for cards meant for quick resale. A crossover can convert a slab later, but it costs another submission and another wait: better to pick the right company first time.
