PSA or BGS

This is the most common decision on a strong modern card. It is not settled by which company grades harder, but by what you plan to do with the slab.

In short

Choose PSA if the card is for resale: at an equal grade a PSA slab sells faster and usually higher, because it is the reference buyers recognise. Choose BGS if the card is high-end and you want its condition documented: four printed subgrades — centering, corners, edges, surface — and the Black Label Pristine 10, which requires all four at 10, has no PSA equivalent. On an average card headed for sale, subgrades expose weaknesses and work against the seller.

The decision in three real situations

PSA
You are selling within the year

PSA. The liquidity premium is real and immediate: the slab is recognised by every buyer, including those who know nothing about grading. This is the most common case and the easiest to settle.

BGS
The card is exceptional

BGS. On a card you believe is flawless, aiming for the Black Label makes sense: it is a status, not just a grade. The subgrades also justify a high price to a demanding buyer.

BGS
You want to understand your failures

BGS. Four numbers tell you whether your cards are capped by centering — unfixable, so it becomes a buying criterion — or by surface, which depends on your handling and storage.

The three differences that actually matter

A subgrade is public information

With PSA the buyer sees an 8 and imagines an even card. With BGS they see that the 8.5 comes from a centering subgrade of 7. Transparency lifts great cards and penalises the rest — the same mechanism running both ways.

The scales do not convert

There is no official conversion table. Commercially a BGS 9.5 compares to a PSA 10 far more than to a PSA 9, and a Black Label exceeds a PSA 10 on sought-after cards. Assuming 9 equals 9 is the most expensive mistake here.

The real cost is not the listed price

From Europe, the mandatory dealer step for PSA changes the arithmetic: the catalogue price is not what you will pay. With BGS, the subgrade option, insurance and shipping add up too. Compare full costs, not price-grid lines.

Frequently asked questions — PSA or BGS

Which of the two grades harder?

The question is poorly framed: both apply close but not identical tolerances, and the outcome depends on the card's dominant defect. BGS has a reputation for being demanding on centering and makes it visible; PSA absorbs the same weakness into a single number. The same card can come back a 9 from one and an 8.5 from the other, in either direction.

Does a BGS 9.5 resell like a PSA 10?

It comes close on modern cards, less so on vintage sports where the PSA 10 keeps a clear premium. As a rule: the more a segment is driven by casual buyers, the more PSA wins; the more it is driven by informed collectors, the narrower the gap.

Can a card be moved from one slab to the other?

Yes, through a crossover: the card is submitted in its original slab with a minimum acceptable grade. If that grade is not reached, the card comes back sealed. It is common practice, but it costs an extra submission and an extra wait.

Which one for Japanese Pokémon?

Neither by default: on that specific segment CGC is often the best compromise, because the resale gap against PSA is the narrowest on the market there.

How do you know before submitting?

By estimating the four criteria from photographs. If centering already caps the card at 8, the choice of company will not change much — and the real question becomes whether to submit at all.

Estimate the grade before you decide

The report scores the points lost per criterion — that is what decides, not the logo on the slab.
