Evolving Skies (Sword & Shield 7, August 2021) became the modern reference set thanks to the Eeveelution alternate arts. It is also a demanding set to grade: dark borders, capricious English centering, and a texture that divides opinion.
Grading an Evolving Skies card comes down to centering first: English print runs are irregular, and it is the main criterion separating a PSA 10 from a 9 — on the Umbreon VMAX alternate art (“Moonbreon”, 215/203), only about 30% of submitted copies come back PSA 10, across more than 10,000 cards graded at PSA and BGS. The set's dark borders mark next: the slightest edge or corner whitening shows more than on a light-bordered set. Print lines in the VMAX texture exist but generally weigh less than those two factors. Before buying raw to grade, measure the centering — a copy close to 50/50 trades 20 to 30% higher, and earns it.

SWSH07 English sheets often come out shifted. Since PSA tightened its ladder in early 2025, a front beyond 55/45 closes the 10: measure before submitting — and above all before buying raw, since the premium on a well-centered copy is thoroughly earned.
Edge or corner whitening that would be near-invisible on a light-bordered set jumps out on Evolving Skies' dark cards. One badly fitted sleeve is enough to create the flaw that costs the 10.
Textured VMAX and alt arts can carry print lines in the relief. Graders penalise them less than a clean scratch, but a marked line visible outside raking light is still a surface flaw.

Because the set's two dominant flaws stack on a dark, high-demand card: irregular English centering and borders that mark. Across more than 10,000 copies graded at PSA and BGS, roughly 30% come back a 10 — decent for modern, but far from a given.
Only after measuring the centering and inspecting the borders under raking light. The price gap between a 9 and a 10 on this set is such that submitting “to see” is the surest way to pay grading fees for a grade you could have predicted.
Japanese print runs are statistically better centered, which raises the odds of a high grade. The trade-off is a different market: the English alt art remains the most demanded version at resale on this particular set.
It complicates the surface read: relief can hide a micro-scratch or, conversely, create a misleading reflection. Shoot in diffuse light and add a raking-light shot if you want to clear doubt on the focal area.
