Valuable vintage Western card → PSA
On a Base Set Charizard or a sought-after Wizards-era card, the PSA premium far exceeds the extra cost and delay. This is the segment where buyer reflex is strongest.
PSA or CGC
On TCG, and on Pokémon above all, this is the choice most collectors face. It resolves differently depending on whether the card is Western or Japanese.

On Western Pokémon cards headed for resale, PSA keeps a clear price premium: it is the slab buyers look for. On Japanese printings the gap narrows sharply and CGC often becomes the better calculation — lower entry pricing, a shorter stated turnaround in Munich, and a market that recognises the slab on that segment. From the European Union, neither company requires a transatlantic trip for a TCG card any more: since 15 September 2026, individuals submit directly to PSA's Frankfurt facility, and CGC has graded trading card games in Munich since 12 January 2026 — no customs in either case.

How to decide, segment by segment
Japanese card → CGC in most cases
The value gap between slabs is the narrowest on the market there, and Japanese printings are statistically better centred, so more of them grade high. The calculation naturally favours the cheaper, faster service.
Recent set with a moving price → CGC
Tying up a card for months on a volatile market is a risk in itself. CGC's Standard level states 10 working days in the US ($55), and every Munich tier except Bulk (75) states 45 — against 80 to 90 business days at PSA's European Standard level: the slab comes back while demand still exists.
A batch of average cards → often neither
Below a certain value, no slab pays for the fees. The right question is then not which company but whether to grade at all. An estimate up front avoids a pile of unsellable graded cards.

Frequently asked questions — PSA or CGC
Is CGC valued below PSA?
On sports cards and Western Pokémon, yes — the price gap at an equal grade is clear. On Japanese TCG the gap is the narrowest on the market, and the decision then comes down to price and turnaround.
Are the grades equivalent between the two?
No, and no official equivalence exists. Tolerances differ, particularly on surface and on the treatment of Japanese cards. The same card can get a 9 from one and a 9.5 from the other.
Does CGC offer subgrades?
Not on its official fee grids: neither the US nor the Munich grid lists a subgrade line (checked on 29 September 2026), so we do not state a price. If you need the breakdown, confirm with CGC before submitting; on an average card meant for sale, showing it can expose a weakness anyway.
Which is simpler from Europe?
Both, now, for a trading card game: since 15 September 2026, individuals in the European Union submit directly to PSA's Frankfurt facility, and since 12 January 2026 CGC has graded TCGs in Munich, with direct submissions accepted. The cards stay inside the EU in both cases, so no customs. Simpler is not the same price, though: €49.99 per card at PSA's launch price (whether VAT is included is not confirmed) against €22.61 incl. VAT at CGC Munich's Economy tier, shipping excluded in both cases.
Does the PSA facility in Frankfurt change things?
Yes, since it opened to individuals on 15 September 2026: no transatlantic leg, no customs, no mandatory dealer. It does not remove PSA's own processing time, which remains the long part: 80 to 90 business days stated at the Standard level.
