SGC is the only company that genuinely contests a segment with PSA: old sports cards. Everywhere else the balance of power is clear — you just need to know which side your card is on.
On a modern sports card or a TCG card, PSA wins: maximum liquidity, a slab recognised everywhere, a resale premium that covers the extra cost. On vintage sports — pre-war, tobacco cards, the 1950s-1980s — SGC is a credible alternative, though no longer a much cheaper one: $50 per card (declared value up to $1,500, 1 to 9 cards) against $59.99 at PSA's Standard level (€49.99 in the EU at launch), but a shorter stated turnaround, the black “tuxedo” slab the segment loves, and recognised authentication expertise. SGC-to-PSA crossover remains a common way to convert a slab before an international sale.

The fee gap has shrunk: $50 per card at SGC against $59.99 at PSA's Standard level. What still tips a 1950s card towards SGC is a stated turnaround about half PSA's, and a black background that shows these cards at their best — two arguments buyers in the segment know.
At the top of the market the PSA premium becomes decisive again. A common strategy: grade at SGC to establish condition, then attempt the PSA crossover with a minimum grade on the few pieces that justify it.
An SGC slab on a Pokémon card or a modern rookie resells poorly: off its home turf, SGC loses the expertise advantage without gaining liquidity. Reserve it for cards you are not grading to sell.
At the standard level, SGC states 40 to 50 business days; PSA states roughly twice that at Standard — shipping on top in both cases. If the card must be sold by a specific date — a rookie anniversary, a media window — this parameter can decide on its own.

On vintage sports the gap is the smallest in the market and can become negligible on sought-after pieces. On modern and TCG, a PSA 10 resells clearly higher. The answer depends on the card, not on a universal conversion rate.
Not any more at the entry level. SGC's public grid starts at $50 per card for a declared value up to $1,500 (1 to 9 cards; checked on 29 September 2026), then $85 up to $3,500. PSA paused its economy (Value) tiers in June 2026; its cheapest level, the Standard available since 14 September, costs $59.99 in the US and €49.99 in the EU at the launch price. The “around $15” still quoted for SGC does not match its current public grid.
Technically yes. But the secondary market for an SGC slab on TCG is narrow: at resale, the gap versus a PSA or CGC slab almost always exceeds the saving on submission.
The card is submitted to PSA in its SGC slab with a required minimum grade. If PSA does not reach that grade, the card comes back still sealed in its original slab. It is the classic safety net for converting a vintage collection before an international sale.
